Educational Development Plan (EDP)
The purpose of the Educational Development Plan (EDP) is to allow students an opportunity to explore career choices, identify strengths, and select courses which will assist them in reaching their career goals. The EDP focuses on self-exploration, personal assets, self-improvement, work values, resume preparation and decision making–all designed to facilitate and increase students' work readiness. Utilizing staff support, each student is responsible for developing a meaningful and comprehensive Educational Development Plan.

Your Career Connection
Along with the information contained in this book, students and parents are welcome to visit the Career Information Center in each school. The Career Information Center staff provides services and information about jobs, careers, colleges and much more. The Center is located within the counseling office in each school. It serves as an important link between the student, the work world and the community.

A sample of some of the services and information available is:

  • Michigan Occupational Information System (MOIS)
  • Job referral services
  • Resume and interview techniques
  • Military information
  • College information
  • School activities and events

Career Pathway
A career pathway is a program of study relating to certain occupations. Six career pathways have been identified: Arts and Communication, Business and Management, Health Services, Human Services and Public Administration, Industrial and Engineering, and Natural Resources. The pathways are broad groupings of career areas that share similar characteristics and whose employment requirements call for many common interests, strengths and competencies. The desired results are student achievement and career choices. The pathway allows the student to develop strong skills in essential academic subjects, taught from the perspective of a field in which the student has expressed or demonstrated a strong interest. Academic content is identical in all career pathways, but the presentation varies. The pathway identifies the specialized academic and occupational training a student must have to succeed in his or her chosen field. The type and rigor of training may differ–for example, for a nurse's aid, a nurse, or a doctor–but certain core and foundation requirements are consistent.
