Career
Pathway
A career
pathway is a program of study relating to certain occupations. Six career
pathways have been identified: Arts and Communication, Business and
Management, Health Services, Human Services and Public Administration,
Industrial and Engineering, and Natural Resources. The pathways are
broad groupings of career areas that share similar characteristics and
whose employment requirements call for many common interests, strengths
and competencies. The desired results are student achievement and career
choices. The pathway allows the student to develop strong skills in
essential academic subjects, taught from the perspective of a field
in which the student has expressed or demonstrated a strong interest.
Academic content is identical in all career pathways, but the presentation
varies. The pathway identifies the specialized academic and occupational
training a student must have to succeed in his or her chosen field.
The type and rigor of training may differfor example, for a nurse's
aid, a nurse, or a doctorbut certain core and foundation requirements
are consistent.
