Standardized Tests
In order to evaluate achievement and ability of students, the counseling department administers several tests as follows:

PSAT/NMSQTACTSAT IIAP
CLEPTOEPL/TWE/TSLASVAB

 

PSAT/NMSQT (top of page)

  • Date: October, Grade 11
  • Purpose: Practice test for SAT. Learn about strengths and weaknesses in English and Math. Compete for National Merit Scholarships. Compare performances with college-bound students nationally. Participate in Student Search Program.
  • Registration: Register in Counseling Office by the announced deadline. Submit required fee.
  • Tips: Take practice test and read Student Bulletin. Penalties are given for guessing on test. Test given at all UCS high schools on Saturday test date.

ACT (top of page)

  • Date: Spring, Grade 11 October, Grade 12
  • Purpose: Score used for Michigan Competitive Scholarship program. Most Michigan colleges and some out-of-state schools use for admission decisions. Enters participant in college search program. Assesses four academic areas.
  • Registration: Take the practice test provided in packet. Read testing tips. No Penalty for guessing.

SAT II (top of page)

  • Date: November/December, Grade 12
  • Purpose: Test knowledge in specific subjects. Used for admissions and placement of students in courses at highly selective schools.
  • Registration: Pick up registration form and achievement test booklet in counseling office. Register with test company by deadline.
  • Tips: Take test at the conclusion of high school course. Check which tests are required/preferred by college.

(AP) Advanced Placement Tests (top of page)

  • Date: May, Grades 11 and 12
  • Purpose: Earn college credits based on high school course work, saving time and money in college. Receive advanced placement at higher course level.
  • Registration: Register with A.P. teacher by March and submit check to designated person.
  • Tips: Check with colleges as to A.P. rules and scores required for credit. Release scores to college. Most colleges recognize outstanding test scores.

(CLEP) College Level Examination Program (top of page)

  • Date: Designated dates, Grade 12
  • Purpose: Earn college credits, saving time and money in college. Test knowledge in 35 subject areas and five general areas.
  • Registration: See counselor for CLEP registration information. Register with CLEP test center - Macomb Community College in this area.
  • Tips: Review CLEP policy at college of your choice before taking test.

TOEPL, TWE, TSL (Test of English as a Foreign Language, Test of Written Language, Test of Spoken Language) (top of page)

  • Date: Spring, Grade 11
  • Purpose: To evaluate the English proficiency of students whose native language is not English.

ASVAB (top of page)

  • Date: Eleventh or Twelfth year. Dates vary at each high school.
  • Purpose: Scores used to help students plan careers and identify their strengths and weaknesses. Also scores are used to place students into military education and career programs if a student joins the military.
  • Registration: Pick up registration information in the Counseling Office.
