Explore your options. At some point in the near future, you will need to begin making plans toward a career. The first step is to combine the information you know about yourself with your career interests. Once you know this, you can begin to explore the educational training needed to achieve your goal.

Remember, good college and career decisions require good information. While you should identify your interests, continue to explore and keep your options open.

College or University (top of pagehome)

  • Requirements: High school diploma, college prep curriculum, acceptable G.P.A. and class rank, test scores, and extra curricular activities. Some schools accept the G.E.D.

  • Training: 4 years for Bachelor's degree. Master's and Doctoral degrees require 6 or more years of training.

  • Tips: Visit campuses. Check catalogs. Use high school career centers. Attend college representative high school visitations. Talk with students who attend. Many colleges and universities offer special help programs for students with learning problems. Copies of catalogs for colleges with those facilities can be seen or borrowed in each high school counseling office.

Community College (top of pagehome)

  • Requirements: Prefer high school diploma or G.E.D. Special testing/abilities for selected programs.

  • Training: 6 months to 2 years. Certificate and Associate Degree options.

  • Tips: Visit school. Check placement record. Talk with students who attend. Note: Macomb Community College (Center Campus) provides the University Center for students wishing to enroll in a 2+2 program which leads to a bachelor's degree. Several area universities provide staff and programs at the University Center. Direct inquiries to the University Center at 810 263-6033.

  • Note: A Special Services Department offers a variety of services to disadvantaged students and to students who are eligible for special education services.

Business, Trade, Technical (top of pagehome)

  • Requirements: Prefer high school diploma or G.E.D. Special abilities may be required depending on program.

  • Training: Varies depending on program. Schools privately owned. Offer certificates upon completion of program.

  • Tips: Check accreditation. Tour facilities.

Military (top of pagehome)

  • Requirements: Minimum age requirement. High school diploma or G.E.D. Pass physical exam. Meet minimum test requirements. Aptitude tests. Must make a commitment.

  • Training: Various training programs that provide job skills. Minimum 2 years time. Includes "basic" or "boot camp" training.

  • Tips: Obtain any guaranteed program in writing.
