Experience the workplace you might be interested in before making your choice. Take advantage of the various work opportunities listed below. Explore options so you can make the right choice for you. Don't lock yourself out. If you work in an area in which you are interested, you will most likely succeed.

 

Apprenticeships (STRA) (top of page)

In a School-to-Registered Apprenticeship program, high school students work part-time in registered apprenticeships for local employers while they complete their high school graduation requirements. After graduation, student apprentices continue to work full time as well as attend community college.

For more information about these programs, please contact your School-to-Work Coordinator in your high school counseling office or the Career and Technical Education Department at (810) 795-2300.

  • Requirements: 18-26 years of age. High school diploma or G.E.D. Special academic abilities. High test scores. Manual dexterity. Personal interview. Prior vocational education or related work experience.

  • Training: 3-6 years. State or federal registered programs. Large company unregistered programs. Combination school and work.

  • Tips: Contact state employment office for information.

 

On-The-Job-Training (top of page)

  • Requirements: Minimal skills. File application. Interview. High school diploma preferred.

  • Training: Learn an occupation or skill while working. Training varies in length of time.

  • Tips: Seek opportunities through small companies.

 

Cooperative Education/Internships (top of page)

  • Requirements: File application. Personal interview. Employment potential in that field.

  • Training: Alternate working terms with academic terms. Length of program varies.

  • Tips: Contact community college or university of your choice for information on programs.

 

Business Partnerships (top of page)

  • Requirements: Available to anyone on a fee basis. Free to graduates or non-graduates 18 or 19 years old and older and to G.E.D. certificate holders.

  • Training: Complete course of study in various career areas. Provides job skills. Training requirements vary.

Michigan Jobs Commission (top of page)

  • Requirements: Available to certified special education students who meet the criteria set by the commission. High school diploma.

  • Training: Job opportunities provided. Job coaches are needed. Assessments if necessary.
