Academy Addresses

Admission to four of the service academies is by congressional appointment. The Congressmen are looking for outstanding students who are willing to devote themselves to academic excellence, research and who show strong leadership capabilities. Interested applicants are advised to contact their Congressman's office by early October of their senior year. At that time they should indicate an academy preference. In addition to contacting their Congressman, an applicant should also contact the academy he/she wishes to attend to obtain a 'pre-candidate application form'.

In order to be considered for nomination, a student must be:

  1. A citizen of the United States at time of application.
  2. Between the ages of 17 and 22.
  3. Unmarried with no dependents.
  4. Able to meet high leadership and academic standards.
  5. Of high moral character.

Air Force Academy (top of page)
A cadet trains to be an Air Force Officer through a four-year fully accredited college curriculum. The Air Force Academy offers more than 25 majors in everything from science to legal studies. A graduate of the Academy must fulfill at least a six year military obligation after graduation. Graduates are commissioned as 2nd Lieutenants. (Vision requirements are very strict for those wishing to be pilots.)

U. S. Military Academy (top of page)
West Point provides the broad college education demanded by the military while maintaining a degree of academic specialization equal to that of civilian universities. Upon graduation, the cadet is commissioned as a Second Lieutenant in the U.S. Army and is required to serve at least six years of active duty.

U. S. Naval Academy (top of page)
Once admitted to the Naval Academy, the candidate attends the academy for four years and graduates with a Bachelor of Science degree and a reserve commission as an ensign in the Navy or as a Second Lieutenant in the Marine Corps. Naval Academy graduates serve at least five years as Navy or Marine Corps officers upon graduation from the academy.

U.S. Merchant Marine Academy (top of page)
This academy specializes in marine engineering and related military fields. Appointments are made by the academy itself. Appointments are based on statewide nominations from members of Congress. Michigan has been allotted ten spots per year. Applicants are accepted to the academy as midshipmen in the United States Naval Reserve.

U.S. Coast Guard Academy (top of page)
Academy appointments are based on a nationwide competition. Students interested in attending the Coast Guard Academy should apply directly to the academy. This is predominantly an engineering and military college. Upon graduation there is an obligatory five-year service commitment.

In addition to these academies, students also have the option of choosing a college with an R.O.T.C. program.

R.O.T.C. (Reserve Officers Training Corps) (top of page)
R.O.T.C. is a program which offers college students the opportunity to graduate as officers and serve in the military. Scholarships are available and awarded on a competitive basis. In addition to covering college costs, the scholarships also give the students approximately $1000 extra. Upon graduation from college the student fulfills a military commitment.
