Colleges
sometimes require a personal statement as part of their admission process.
Even if not required, a personal essay included with one's application
may enhance a student's opportunity for admission.
Think
about the following:
"How
am I unique?"
Colleges
want to know what makes you a unique individual. Your personal statement
or essay takes a factual record and turns it into a "human being."
When the admissions committee is undecided, this is your tie breaker!
Think
about who you are, where you are needed, and why.
- Consult with
teachers and your counselor for form and content.
- Don't rehash
a record listed elsewhere, grades, etc.
- Be creative
and original but never gimmicky.
- Be specific
in detail; anecdotes help greatly.
- Don't write
a travelogue.
- Statement should
reflect your personality and values.
- Show how an
event or person had impact on your life.
- Don't write
an autobiography
- Include your
name and social security number on your essay.
- Make a copy
for your records.

I have been a member of the National Honor Society for the past two
years and the Honor Roll as well. I was captain of the tennis team my
senior year and made All-County Honorable Mention. During the summer
I traveled to Europe and went to tennis camp. I presently have an afterschool
job at the Happy Hamburger so that I can save money for college. I understand
that Generic University has an excellent program in Carpeting Design.
I am looking forward to pursuing a career in this field and am confident
that Generic will give me the best preparation.

My summer vacation changed my life. This past summer I had the opportunity
of touring France and viewing medieval tapestries at various museums
with my high school French class. My fascination with their color, design,
and history has piqued my interest in a career in carpeting design.
I have selected courses that would prepare me for this major at Generic
University and have become a museum volunteer in my spare time. While
I enjoy a variety of school activities from varsity tennis to the National
Honor Society, my summer adventure has given me greater focus on my
priorities. I am looking forward to pursuing my goal at Generic University.
