How to write your personal essay

College applications for most Michigan colleges are available in the counseling office. Out–of–state applications can be obtained by writing to the colleges. A sample request letter is available by clicking here. Addresses may be found in a number of references in the counseling office. Applications should be made September through December of senior year. The college application should be completed with great care since it is the first impression the college receives of the student.

  • Read each question carefully.

  • Type accurately or print neatly and legibly in black or blue ink.

  • Write a rough draft of any response that requires a sentence or more, and then transfer it to the application.

  • When an essay is required, it is very important to consult with your counselor or English teacher to review the content.

  • Ask the counselor to explain any question or section that is unclear.

  • Complete all items.

  • Sign the application.

  • Attach a check or money order for the application fee if one is required.

  • Give the completed application to the counselor to review and mail; applications should be submitted by December 1 of senior year. Due to increasing numbers of applications, the earlier you apply the greater are your chances for admission.

  • Record the date the application was submitted.

  • Highly selective colleges and universities often require a more extensive application that demands considerable time and effort.

  • Explore the application process during the junior year.

  • Request a current application early in the senior year.

  • Review all parts of the application and the deadline dates.

  • Solicit letters of recommendation from teachers well in advance of deadline.

  • Consult with teachers and counselors concerning your personal essay.
